Antiepileptic (anticonvulsant) drugs are central nervous system and neuronal stabilizers. They can be utilized in treatment of any disease involving either the central or peripheral nervous system. Most commonly they are utilized to control convulsive seizures, psychotic behavior and pain. Some of the drugs in this class have very narrow therapeutic ranges and can easily produce toxicity. Levels are necessary to optimize therapy to achieve neuronal stability, prevent toxicity and confirm compliance.
