Xylazine is a sedative and analgesic drug used within the veterinary industry to produce a calming and sedative effect in large animals. Recently, it has been linked to the use of illicit drugs, particularly in the context of opioid abuse. When combined with xylazine, the effects of fentanyl can be intensified and prolonged. The combination is sometimes referred to as “tranq dope” or “sleep dope”.

Unfortunately, this drug combination has been associated with a significant increase in overdose deaths in the United States. This is mainly due to the combination causing respiratory depression, reducing blood pressure, heart rate, and body temperature to critical levels.

In 2023, fentanyl is involved in more deaths of Americans under 50 than any other cause of death, and the combination of Xylazine with fentanyl continues to be a growing trend in the ever-changing drugs of abuse market.
